Village of Pocahontas building permit requirements

A building permit is required for new construction and most alterations to existing buildings including new roofs. Replacing existing siding, windows, doors, and interior fixtures such as carpet, cabinets, etc., does not require a permit unless changes are made to the electrical, plumbing, structure, or wall material. Please call if you have any questions.

Applicable fees must be paid before a permit will be issued. The fee schedule is available from the village clerk’s office.

The following inspections must be completed when applicable:
  • Foundation footings: 24-hour notice must be given to the inspector
  • Pre-drywall inspection is required for all building structural changes, electrical wiring, or plumbing changes
  • Final inspection before occupancy
  • Roofing (except for minor patching)
The Village uses the following national codes:
  • National Electrical Code 2020
  • Illinois Plumbing Code current edition
  • International Building Code 2021 (for commercial)
  • International Fuel Gas Code 2021
  • International Residential Code 2021
